MythBusters Hot Water Tank Explosion!

Provincial Tank Lining and Inspections Inc. - Domestic Hot Water Storage Tank Explosion

I found a crazy video of the guys from MythBusters applying a little too much pressure to a Hot Water Storage Tank.  The results are scary.

Think about this sort of thing happening to a large DHWST within the Penthouse Boiler Room of an expensive Condo/Strata building...not pretty.

Wow...that's impressive.

Jason

The Face of Corrosion

Provincial Tank Lining and Inspections Inc. - Visual Internal Inspection

I was perusing through our inventory of pictures and came across an image that scared me.  I know I've displayed some pretty horrifying images of Domestic Hot Water Tanks in the past but nothing...nothing comes close to this image.

The Face of Corrosion

Provincial Tank Lining and Inspections Inc. - The Face of Corrosion
The Face of Corrosion

Do you see it? Look to the very center of the image.  This image has not been doctored.  The face appears to be almost "Grinch" like, devious.

I believe this image encapsulates the very essence of corrosion...evil and destructive.

Have You Been Filtered?

Provincial Tank Lining and Inspections Inc. - JUDO Point-of-Entry Water Filtration Units

A few weeks ago I spent some time on Vancouver Island having meetings and making connections with people in our industry.  One of the gentlemen I met, introduced me to JUDO Water Filtration.  He was so excited to show me this miracle of German Engineering.  I have to admit, the system is pretty impressive.

Essentially, the JUDO 'point of entry' units prevent Particulate Matter and other physical impurities from entering our water systems (pumps, pipes, tanks, valves...) and protect our systems from premature wear and deterioration.  Ultimately saving us dollars and unwanted downtime.  A proactive strategy is always the better strategy!

JUDO carries both manual and automatic units for residential and commercial applications.

Below is an exert of information from the JUDO website.

JUDO Point-Rotation-System

"The PROFI and PROFIMAT allows water to flow and be filtered through a stainless steel filter sieve, which traps and retains all the physical impurities until an manual (JPF) or automatic (JPF-A) backwash is initiated. During backwash there is NO interruption to the buildings water supply or to the filtration process due to the working principals of the filters patented point-rotation-system allowing water to be filtered even during a backwash cycle.

The JUDO PROFI series is the first Self-Cleaning Backwash Point-of-entry water filtration system of its kind that is CSA and NSF 61 approved and certified for applications on domestic potable water supplies in North America!" ~ www.judo.eu/judo/CA/start.php

Unmaintained Hot Water Storage Tank

Provincial Tank Lining and Inspections Inc. - Hot Water Storage Tank Maintenance

Today I want to use a few images to once again, highlight the importance of preventative maintenance on large, Domestic Hot Water Storage Tanks with manways.

Below are a few images from an inspection completed by Provincial Tank Lining and Inspections Inc.  They are frightening at best.  Remember...this is a potable water storage tank, it is used for bathing and drinking.

Troubleshoot Sediment in Hot Water Tanks

Provincial Tank Lining and Inspections Inc.

I was on YouTube today looking for some videos relevant to our services and came across the video below.  This video speaks specifically to maintenance on the smaller disposable tanks (119 US Gal and under) but he presents similar issues we see in the Large Hot Water Storage Tanks with manways.

Unfortunately Provincial Tank Lining and Inspections provides no services for this size of tank but when we come across them, I always mention 2 things to obtain a prolonged servicing life.
  1. Flush your tank yearly.
  2. Replace the anode every year or at least every second year.
This video speaks of both these required services and also highlights the dangers/expenses of accumulated sediment.

So what do I want you take home form this video that is relevant to the larger DHWSTs?
  1. Preventative maintenance will give you a prolonged servicing life.
  2. Your tank should have a maintenance program.
  3. Sediment should be removed to prevent problems.
  4. Anodes must be replace to protect unlined areas of the tank.
Contact Provincial Tank Lining and Inspections for more information pertaining to large Domestic Hot Water Storage Tanks with manways.

Jason

Fraser Valley, BC - Visual Internal Assessment

Provincial Tank Lining and Inspections Inc. - Visual Internal Assessment

The following images are from a Visual Internal Assessment in BC, the Fraser Valley District.  The purpose of this inspection was to determine a preventative maintenance plan for the client and to supply them with the necessary information (via report with images) to obtain funding for the required maintenance.

Provincial Tank Lining and Inspections - Visual Internal Assessment
Debris and sediment found on the lower part of the Storage Tank.
Unprotected Manway Cover: The big chunks of cement in the above image are from the manway cover.  Portions of the lining protecting the manway cover have fallen off leaving the manway unprotected.  The fine particles of cement are from the natural deterioration of the cement lining.  The remaining debris is corrosion from the tanks inlets and outlets as well as debris from outside sources.

Provincial Tank Lining and Inspections - Visual Internal Assessment
Debris and sediment surrounding the outlet of a Hot Water Storage Tank.
Depleted Anode: In this image, you will notice a corroded long thin object just to the bottom left of the outlet.  This object is what's left of the magnesium anode designed to protect the inlets and outlets.  The anode is well past it's servicing life and has left the inlets and outlets of this tank unprotected for some time.  If a DHWST is going to leak...it's going to happen around the inlets and outlets.  Regular anode replacement is vital.

Corroded Inlet: The above image highlights the importance of regular anode replacement.  This inlet has begun to corroded and if no service is performed, it will leak in the future.
